It's been four years to the day that I last met Darren Hayes when he performed at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London to play his biggest hits, plus songs from his excellent double LP "This Delicate Thing We've Made." Since then, the Australian singer has re-focused his efforts and started work on his new album "Secret Codes & Battleships" that will be released on October 25.
Hayes tells me in a new video interview that he set out to create a "titanium" pop effort that would be a "masterclass" of everything he has learned over the last twenty years.
The result of his hard work and rejuvenated creative gusto over the last few years is an extraordinary pop record that Hayes collaborated on with a slew of hitmakers, including mixer extraordinaire Robert Orton (Lady Gaga), Carl Falk (Robyn, Nicole Scherzinger), Phil Thornalley (Pixie Lott, Natalie Imbrugila), Steve Robxon (Taylor Swift, Take That) and Walter Afanasieff who also worked on Hayes' "Spin" album and Savage Garden records.
Darren and I caught up for a trans-Pacific video chat to talk about the process leading up to "Secret Codes & Battleships," the big theme that drove his songwriting and music, and the overall aesthetic of the record.
Just like his music and lyrics, Hayes is an open book when it comes to detailing his creative process, and the experiences and emotions that inspire his music. His heartfelt delivery, bittersweet melodies and relatable storytelling on "Secret Codes & Battleships" has once again led to a fantastic pop record that makes Hayes' star shine brighter than ever.
