I'm thrilled to announce that the next ArjanWrites.com ARTIST #TALK will be held on October 25 in New York City with very special guest V V Brown. Produced in very close collaboration with HP, ARTIST #TALK is a series of live interview events that will spotlight an irreverent artist who will talk about his or her music, inspiration and craft.
The intent is to show the story behind the music as opposed to highlighting the project of the moment. A small group of invitees are encouraged to tweet the experience and share some of their unique insights on their own social networks.
After a very successful ARTIST #TALK with Tinie Tempah last month, I will now be chatting with recording artist V V Brown in front of a live audience. And I could not be more excited. V V and I go back a little. She was the headliner of my first SUPERFRAICHEshowcase in Los Angeles at Spaceland during GRAMMY Week in 2009. Since then, V V and I have stayed in touch and I'm excited to be chatting with her about her forthcoming new album "Lollipops & Politics."
The British singer/songwriter first captured the attention of music fans with her gold-certified single "Shark in the Water" and a North American tour with Maroon 5 last year. She began to sketch out ideas for her second album while touring behind her stylishly retro-sounding debut album, 2010's "Travelling Like The Light."
The result is a major leap forward for V V, who "bent herself into experimental musical shape" after listening to the anthemic punk template of The Clash to the experimental electronica of The Knife. V V worked with writers Evan Bogart (Beyonce), Jean Baptiste (Black Eyed Peas), Mr. Griffiths (Jem) and writer/producers Bjorn Yttling (of feted Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John) and Ne-Yo collaborator Chuck Harmony on this record.
ALERT! I'm giving away 5 TICKETS to attend ArjanWrites.com's ARTIST #TALK on October 25. The event will be held at a legendary New York City candy store and you don't want to miss it. Tweet me using hashtag "ARTIST #TALK" and let me know why you'd like to attend. I will draw 5 random winners from all the tweets on Saturday at noon EDT. You must live in NYC or willing to travel there. The winner will get access to the event only (lollipops included!).
Dev announced today that her much-anticipated debut album "The Night The Sun Came Up" will officially drop on January 10, 2012.
In an exclusive interview with ArjanWrites.com this morning, Dev explains that the reason for pushing the release of the album to January is to keep the focus on her single "In The Dark" to give it more time to mature on radio. The extra time will also allow her to write and record a few new tracks that reflect her life as it is now. Dev is pregnant of a baby girl and she's expecting at the end of the year.
"It's bittersweet," she tells me. "I didn't want any of my fans to be upset (. . .) But letting "In The Dark" grow a little bit would be a positive thing for the album and I knew that being able to add more records would be good for the fans as well especially because I can't really perform right now."
Signed to Universal Republic, Dev has had an incredible year and is fully coming into her own as the next big pop icon to watch. Her debut album "The Night The Sun Came Up" includes hit tracks "Bass Down Low" and "In The Dark" that was certified gold and is climbing up the Billboard charts. The video for "In The Dark" received 24 millions views to date.
One of the brightest new talents to look out for at this year's CMJ festival in New York is singer/songwriter Arama Mara who will be playing tonight at the BMI showcase. Inspired by everything from classical to jazz to samba music, Mara is currently working with an impressive slew of producers and songwriters to create a unique brand of pop that pulls together all of her inspirations.
Most notably, the New York-based Mara has been closely collaborating with Switch (Major Lazer, MIA, Santigold) and Guy Sigsworth who is mostly known for his work with Madonna, Imogen Heap and Bjork.
One of the first tracks Mara is sharing with the world is the eclectic "Black Lullaby" that was produced by Sigsworth. Featuring Sigsworth's signature all-digital sound design, the song is a meticulously crafted tune that perfectly pairs Mara's soulful, uplifting vocals with subtle dubstep pop stylings that is simply terrific.
Mara brings a whole lot of musicality to her music that was inspired by her upbringing. "My mom was always listening to Mozart, Brahms and Handel," she explains in an interview. "My father was listening to jazz and Samba artists like Miles Davis,Oscar Peterson and Santana. My sister's alternative tastes in music influenced me as well. She was always singing to Alanis Morisette, 4 Non Blonds and Nirvana. I later discovered the Beatles, Dinah Washington, Bjork, The Specials."
Mara shows off heaps of potential and with the help of people like Switch and Sigsworth she can can mold her unique style into something that can impact the scene in a big way. (Download MP3)
