Jessie J summarizes the past 10 months of traveling, playing shows and meeting fans in the video for her new U.S. single "Domino" that is a compilation of past videos and candid B-roll footage. While the singer released "Who You Are" overseas as a single, North America gets to enjoy the tightly produced "Domino," a track courtesy of producer Dr Luke and hitwriter Claude Kelly.
After previously working on "Price Tag" together, "Domino" shows a different side of the teaming between Jessie J and Dr Luke. He adds a sleek shine to this ferocious pop production that is masterfully engineered. Jessie J does what Jessica Cornish does so well. She sings, belts, cheers and roars her heart out to greet listeners with a voice that is instantly impressive.
The video for "Domino" also reminds us of one of Jessie J's most memorable performances to date. That impromptu boombox show she performed at a Times Square subway station in New York City, showing off her raw talent that had commuters stop in their tracks to see what that incredible voice was all about. I'm glad that footage is included because it reminds us why we are so captivated with Jessie J in the first place.
Jack Light's "This Is not A Game" is a fresh fusion of U.K. bass, grime, pop, hip hop and dance that the 16 year-old soundboard prodigy and rapper wraps up tightly into one explosive package. Combining savvy, raw talent and plenty of sonic swag, the talented newcomer takes listeners through some banging twists and turns on "This Is Not Game," and clearly brings his A game while clearly stating that's he serious about things. Hailing from Hertfordshire, England, Light recently got signed to Coda Agency, a European music management firm that also takes care of artists like LMFAO, Devlin and Chipmunk. Judging from the sound of "This Is Not A Game," Light's future is looking bright - either as a producer, artist or both. (You can find out more about Jack Light on Facebook.)
One of the most exciting new tracks on James Morrison's excellent new album, titled "The Awakening," is his silky smooth duet with Jessie J. The two soulful pop crooners harmonize beautifully on Morrison's forthcoming new single "Up." a song about never giving up on a love you believe in that was inspired by his late father who battled with depression.
Morrison was hesitant at first about teaming with Jessie J and wanted the intensely personal song to have a lower profile. "I want my fans to have their own feelings for that song, not just think it's about my dad," he explains to a U.K. newspaper. The singer came around though and is now very happy with Jessie's vocal interpretation of his lyrics. "Jessie's an amazing singer. This really shows off her vocals."
Even though the song's lyrics come from a very personal experience, their meaning carries a universal meaning. "It's never too late to turn it back around. Yeah I know you can. Don't bury your demons deep in the ground when it all falls down. The only way is up, up, up," Morrison and Jessie J harmonize. You can watch a preview of the video here.
"The Awakening" is Morrison's third studio album that follows "Undiscovered" (2006) and "Songs for You, Truths for Me" (2008), which both garnered widespread critical acclaim as they topped the British charts. You may remember that before teaming with Jessie J for this new single, Morrison also dueted with Nelly Furtado on "You Make It Real" that was a hit single across Europe. The song helped Morrison to cross over from his soulful origins into the pop world, and with this new collaboration with Jessie J he intends to do that again.
If you're looking for some great new tunage for this Fall weekend, definitely consider listenting to "The Awakening." With his robust delivery and elegant songwriting ability, Morrison crafts rapturous anthemic pop that is perfect for the season.
