Ellie Goulding does not only work up a sweat on stage, she's also an avid runner who stays in tip-top shape by hitting the asphalt for a few healthy miles a few times a week. In fact, during one of her earlier British tours, Ellie would tweet fans in cities she was performing in to invite them to run along with her.
This week, Nike released Music Runs Ellie, a brand-new video advertorial that combines footage of Ellie's passion for music and running. It's movie trailer-like, wide-screen cinematic experience with a hefty dose of athletic drama plus some great live footage of Ellie's recent U.S. shows and her DJ set with Starsmith during New York Fashion Week.
If you get in the mood to hit the track yourself after waching the movie, I suggest you pick up Ellie's "Run Into The Light" 30-minute compilation on Rdio to get you warmed and ready to rumble. (Watch the short film after the break.)
Labrinth and Tinie Tempah can move mountains together. See the two Brit stars smash it for their performance of Labrinth's new single "Earthquake" this morning at BBC Radio One's Live Lounge. Labrinth ups the moody orchestral undertones of the adrenaline-fueled original with a fully-outfitted string quartet and perfectly-rehearsed, harmonizing background singers. It's a big, epic new treatment worthy of the mighty qualities of the song. Watch it after the break.
In the ten years that I have been writing this blog, I don't think I have ever blogged about a Dutch-language track. It may be a little surprising especially since I was born and raised in The Netherlands and I'm well in tune with the pop scene there. But I think the Dutch guttural can sound pretty abrasive and may not always be so appealing to foreign listeners. However, I think the time has come to give you a taste of some of the great pop that is made in Holland - especially with the help of the dance producers that rule the music scene there.
Case in point is this fantastic new track by Dutch power pop outfit BLØF that exclusively premieres here on ArjanWrites.com.
BLØF has been cranking out hit after hit for the past two decades combining earnest songwriting with a heartfelt delivery that continues to move fans. After previously collaborating with The Counting Crows, the group teamed up with none other than remixer and producer extraordinaire Chew Fu who previously was commissioned to remix tracks for Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
Chew Fu brings on the goose bumps and gives BLØF a proper dancefloor make-over. "Was Je Maar Hier" (which translates to "I Wish You Were Here") is a shimmering and intensely atmospheric track that packs a bittersweet punch both musically and lyrically. Lead singer Paskal Jacobson sings, "I wonder where you've been. Broken and wounded, I'm missing you more than I thought I'd ever would. I wish you were. I wish you were here with me."
Perfectly matching style with substance, you don't have to understand the lyrics to makes sense of what feeling BLØF is trying to emote on this song. With the help of the soundboard-savvy Chew Fu, the music, melody and lush production stylings speak volumes. This one may have you crying on the dance floor.
You may remember New York producer Diamond Cut from his work with emerging British electro-pop duo Visitor who will be releasing their debut album soon. Diamond Cut has a fantastic knack for crafting finely-tuned, carefully-cut synth pop that is both stylish and sleek. Recently, he has been working with Aussie singer Catcall (aka Catherine Kelleher) on the track "Satellites" that is taken from her forthcoming debut album, "The Warmest Place."
Catcall's "Swimming Pool" was recently included on the free mixtape that Broke Mogul and Mick Boogie put together for HBO's How To Make It In America. This new lush and sun-drenched "Satellites" gives us a better idea of how her sound is developing. After getting her start in Sydney's art noise and punk scene, her high-end sound sure has evolved quite a bit and with the help of Diamond Cut is sounding polished and produced to perfection. File next to Visitor, Gypsy & The Cat and Empire Of The Sun. (Download Catcall "Satellites" on iTunes in Australia.)
