Rising Canadian pop sensation Kay opened her merch store last week and pops heaps of color with some really cool hoodies and tees that are appropriately branded with slogans like "MINK" and "Going Diamond." MNiK is short for "My Name Is Kay" which is of course her smash debut single that was written by Ryan Tedder and Evan Bogart, and has been topping the pop charts in Canada. I have no doubt that the rest of the world will follow very soon. Kay brings a totally fresh and genuinly unique vibe to the pop scene with her infectious sound and spunky, colorful sense of of style.
Go get yourself some Kay right here. Listen to "My Name Is Kay" below and follow Kay on Tumblr. Also, if you're in Canada (or close), make sure to go see Kay on the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour next month. together with LMFAO, Far East Movement, Frankmusik, Natalia Kills, Colette Carr and Rye Rye.
Hoodie Allen is stirring up a storm with his independently released (and free) "Leap Year" disc that is filled with sunny vibes and happy times that are taken straight from Hoodie's life. Today, the MC unleashed the brand-new video for his new single "James Franco" that has the actor popping up and plastered all over it. Get ready for some Hollyweird hilarity in true Hoodie style that was directed by Gordy Sang.
Franco decided together with his massive online following what video to make. "I let the fans decide which videos they wanted to see off the project, he writes me. "Overwhelmingly, people wanted to see visuals for the song 'James Franco.' We went all the way to Hollywood to shoot this in an effort to find the man behind the song... turns out he wasn't too hard to find."
Allen wrote me earlier this year, "I began writing 'Leap Year' when I decided to leave my job at Google and follow my passion. The thirteen track album is a look into my world and what it means to step out of my comfort zone." He adds, "I wanted Leap Year to mirror my life and experiences--it's fun, crazy, sarcastic, and introspective-- its me growing up on record."
Fun, clever and always courteous, Hoodie Allen is a "college educated music nerd" combining candid storytelling, witty punchlines and poppy hooks. What I like about Allen is that he challenges what has become too often the norm in hip hop. He is all about the music and the rhymes ignoring the misplaced attitude and posing that often runs wild in the hip hop game. There's a new gent in town, and his name is Allen.
After the international success of "Release Me," Swedish pop singer Agnes is back hitting the scene with her new single "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." The song premiered in Sweden, Norway and Denmark late last month, and release dates for the rest of the world will be announced shortly. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is the first single taken from the songstress' forthcoming new LP that is due early 2012.
Agnes' hyper-infectious and string-savvy new pop ditty was written by Agnes together with none other than NERVO who sure know how to crank out a memorable topline. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was produced by Magnus Lidehäll and Vincent Pontare. A brand-new remix of the song premiered this morning that was produced by Niclas Kings. He gave the upbeat tune a firm dancefloor punch without straying too far from the original. Listen to it after the break.
In related Agnes news, the pop singer performed "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" on live television for the first time last night when she appeared on the Rosa Bandet Galan, a fundraising benefit hosted by The Swedish Cancer Society. You can watch that performance here.
