That sassy and multi-talented Kat Graham is at it again with another banging cover. Known to many for her role on CW's The Vampire Diaries and her tour stint with the Black Eyed Peas, this spunky actress, singer and dancer has been teasing fans with a bunch of great covers over the past months.
She released covers of Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted," Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains" and she created a special video mash up of Janet Jackson classics.
Following the success of these revamps, Graham is sharing a fierce remake of Culture Beat's 1993 classic "Mr Vain" with me today. But it's not just any remake. When you listen closely you can hear that it includes a little sonic surprise from a song originally put out by Chaka Kahn that was later popularized by Stardust. This addition totally qualifies Graham's fresh new 2011 version of "Mr Vain" as a proper mash up.
If you're curious about Kat make sure to also check out her tribute to Janet Jackson and her original smash "I Want It All" that was produced by JR Rotem. She's coming on strong and I'm hoping to run into her in Atlanta soon to brainstorm about the next classic tune she should take on. (Download MP3)
V V Brown's excellent new single "Children" is not just a fun pop track. The song packs a potent message and a explicit call to action that the British pop singer wanted to alert people about. "['Children'] was written about a generation that has uninspiring aspirations and believes material wealth is what happiness is," she explains in a press release.
On "Children," Brown takes a stand to encourage people to fight the good fight and have hope for the future. She sings, "Buildings are crumbling, right to the ground and I can't help stop noticing when I'm looking around" that is followed by the hopeful "don't surrender, be all right.
The song's lyrics and overall meaning feel particularly topical given the summer riots in her hometown of London. "You have to give people a voice," she says about the riots. "Everyone has to be heard, because otherwise they will make themselves heard."
In this exclusive video, V V Brown stepped out on the streets of London to get people's feedback on the riots and create context around what happened. It sheds a whole new light on "Children" that has become a torch song for those who are fed up with the status quo, and want to let positivity flow and make things better.
In related V V Brown news, the singer formally announced more details about her forthcoming album today. Titled "Lollipops & Politics," this new album has no release date yet but promises to take "a major stylistic leap by bending herself into experimental musical shape."

3) Red Balloon
