High above the streets of downtown Los Angeles, a new musical dare devil appears and her name is Skylar Grey. Check out the rising new pop singer balancing high in the sky while performing her excellent new single "Invisible" that is taken from her much anticipated debut LP, titled "Invinsible" (a clever pairing of "invisible" and "invincible"). A press release notes that Skylar wrote "Invisible" about a year ago, while living in the Oregon wilderness. It's a place of solitude and inspiration where the singer/songwriter crafted her sonic point of view that in essence is a melodic exploration in darkly brooding yet beautiful vocal textures. "Invisible" is a perfect example of that. The song has a vivid, cinematic quality to it that pretty much defines her rich and complex sound. The video for "Invisible" is inspired by the classic superhero theme and aesthetic. It's Skylar's way of encouraging people to search for their inner-strength in a place where they least expect it. It's like diving into the unknown, "because that's where all your possibilities come from," she explained to Entertainment Weekly back in February. The video was directed by Jay Martin (Wolfmother, Atreyu, Death Cab For Cutie). Skylar talks more about the theme of the video in new press release. "I wanted it to be Peter Parker by day meets Spiderman by night," she says. An everyday kid who isn't really that cool but there's something else going on that people don't know about. That's kind of the journey that I went on. I discovered that my insecurities and my flaws were things that I actually need to embrace, and I let them become my superpowers." British rapper Professor Green blasts back onto the scene with "Read All About It," his brand-new single that features an irresistible and incredibly emotive vocal hook by hotly-tipped singer Emeli Sande. This new track is taken from Green's forthcoming new LP "At Your Inconvenience" that will be released overseas on October 31. "At Your Inconvenience" follows Green's debut album "Alive Till I'm Dead" that was certified double gold earlier this year. The LP garnered him three U.K. hit singles, including "I Need You Tonight," "Just Be Good To Green" and "Monster." Pro's new record is set to represent "a huge leap forward" of his sound while still "peppered with his characteristically cheeky" and straight-to-the-point pop culture reference. Packing an intensity similar to Tinie Tempah's "Written In The Stars, Green's new "Read All About It" neatly unveils his pop-oriented new sound. But it's more than just a slick ditty. "Read All About It" is a powerful autobiographical confessional featuring Green's intimate lyrics and very personal storytelling. On the song, the Hackney lad opens up and speaks specifically about the death of his father who committed suicide when he was 18 years old. The rapper had not been in touch with his dad for six years prior to his passing. Green tries to come to grips with his conflicting emotions of anger, guilt and disappointment on this new single. Green raps, "You were never kin to me. Family is something you've never been to me. As a kid I looked up to you. Only thing was I never saw enough of you. I wonder what I did to you to make you hate me. I ain't censoring myself for nobody. I'm the only thing I can be. All that is good, all that is bad, all that is me." "Read All About It" is a potent, chart-ready tune dominated by both lyrical and melodic intensity that comes straight from the heart. It's an impressive and promising introduction to Professor Green's new album. Listen to it after the break. Loud and proud Boston alt-pop outfit Bodega Girls likes a good challenge and the assignment presented to them by SVEDKA was right up their alley. The spiffy vodka brand asked the group of self-proclaimed "tricksters, hedonists and good-for-nothings" to record a song to go along with their new advertising campaign that is centered around the idea of the "walk of shame." An experience that can be both dreadful and oddly energizing. SVEDKA asked fans, consumers and other party people to share stories about their own "walk of shame." The company opened up a confessional and the stories poured in on Facebook and Twitter with people coming clean about why they wore that sequined shirt in the 8AM board meeting, why they didn't make it home until 4PM in the afternoon or why the heck they woke up pool side with two strangers and some floaties. Inspired by all the wild and rambunctious tales of last night and the groggy walk of shame that follows the next day, Bodega Girls tell their epic tale from last night in their own unbridled and bare-knuckle fashion. The result is a bassy post-disco stomper that will not only spark a smile, but will also have you march that walk of shame all over again - always responsibly, of course. After MTV announced yesterday that according to their calculations Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" is the Song Of The Summer, music industry pub Billboard countered that announcement today by officially declaring LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" the official Song Of The Summer. Billboard writes on its web site, "['Party Rock Anthem'] tops Billboard's Songs of the Summer chart, which ranks the most popular songs based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 from Memorial Day through Labor Day (specifically, the charts dated June 11 through Sept. 17, 2011)." After Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" initially was set to claim the top spot on the Songs of the Summer Chart, LMFAO's momentum with "Party Rock Anthem" was unstoppabble. "'Party Rock Anthem' spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 beginning July 16. Following its Hot 100 reign, it held the No. 2 position for three weeks, helping to secure its spot atop the final Songs of the Summer countdown," writes the music magazine The song was also the only title to rank inside the Hot 100's top 10 in each of the 15 weeks measured for the Songs of the Summer chart. LMFAO is the first duo to "wear the seasonal crown" after Los Del Rios' "Macarena" was the last duo to hold the top summer spot in 1994. Leave a comment after the break and share what track you think will stand the test of time and will forever mark the summer sound of 2011. Hearing "Party Rock Anthem" on the radio everywhere, my instinct back in July was that "Party Rock Anthem" sure was the song of the summer. I asked the LMFAO about that in a recent video interview. Watch that after the break. More Recent Articles |
