MTV Announces Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" Song of The Summer

Kperry-lfn

Now that Labor Day has passed and colder temperatures have set in, MTV and VH1 look back at the sizzling days of summer and announced today that Katy Perry has taken home the first place prize in VH1′s first annual Song Of The Summer competition. Katy Perry is closely followed by Adele ("Rolling In The Deep") and LMFAO ("Party Rock Anthem") who had an incredible momentum as well this summer.

For the last fourteen weeks, MTV has been tracking the race to see which track would become this year's Song Of The Summer. A press release explains what expert math was used to compile this summer countdown of tunes.

MTV Press writes, "Since people consume music in so many different ways these days, the goal was to put together a democratic formula that compared how a group of over 70 songs performed across five of the primary channels that people frequently use to listen to their favorite jams: the Billboard Hot 100 (radio play & sales), the iTunes charts (pure sales), Last.fm scrobbles (listening on computer and mobile devices), the YouTube music charts (streams) and, of course, the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown."

Each week, MTV tracked how the group of competitors fared in each of these different platforms, and then added up the results. "When the summer began, it looked like Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" was going to be an unstoppable force, but as soon as Katy dropped her "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" video during the week of June 27th, she dominated the countdown from there on out."

Note that LMFAO had the strongest presence on YouTube, but never charted on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown, which ultimately hurt their chances to win this award. Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" had a strong presence on iTunes, but didn't do as well on YouTube as "Last Friday Night" did.

[FREE MP3] Adele vs Alesso (Uptill's Rolling In The Pressure Remix)

Uptill-music

UpTill is the musical teaming of childhood pals and Detroit homeboys Steven Siegel and Zack Bobowski who have been working together for the past year to carve out their own unique niche on the wide dance-pop spectrum.

Endlessly inspired by artists like Frankmusik, Alan Braxe, Madeon, Starsmith and Avicii, Uptill's goal is to take the sleek and sparkly emo-filled European dance-pop they love and match it with the emerging appetite for euphoric dance music in America.

Late last year, I premiered their original tune "Please Don't Leave Me" that gave us a first taste of their lush and expertly produced dance-pop sound. Over the past few months, the two soccer-loving and football-playing college students have spent their summer break in Atlanta to toy around with different sounds and production techniques to craft a sound of their own.

The result of their experimentation is a slew of remixes, DJ sets and raw originals that they have shared on SoundCloud. The influential Fear of Tigers podcast caught wind of the rising duo and featured UpTill earlier this summer in an exclusive program.

One of Uptill's newest productions is an excellent mash up that seamlessly fuses Adele's monster tune "Rolling In The Deep" with Alesso's remix of "Pressure" by Alex Kenji, Starkillers and Nadia Ali. Combining Adele's powerful vocals with the mind-altering dance floor qualities of Alesso's remix is pure dance-pop fire that firmly puts UpTill on the map as a very promising new duo to keep your eye on.

If you're ever out and about in Atlanta, make sure to catch UpTill spin at W Hotel's weekly Friday night party and at Club Opera. Listen and grab Uptill's Adele vs Alesso's "Rolling In The Pressure" mash up after the break. Share your thoughts in the new Comments section.

[FRESH NEW] Queen of Hearts "Spanish Sahara" (MP3)

Queen-of-hearts

Rising British electro-pop singer Queen of Hearts once again teams up with producer Dreamtrak to create a shimmering slice of premium-class pop that will have you anxious for more. After the two worked on "Freestyle" together, they now rework Foals' "Spanish Sahara" and turn it into something that is both classy and chic.

Filled with late summer atmospherics, this majestic new version of "Spanish Sahara" neatly spotlights Queen of Hearts lush vocals and mesmerizing delivery, which are two key ingredients of her potent brew of pop that is slowly but surely starting to emerge. The track is taken from her forthcoming debut EP "The Arrival" that includes collaboration with The Sound Of Arrows, Beatrice Hatherley, Dreamtrak and Diamond Cut.

Queen of Hearts is currently in the studio to finalize tracks for her full-length album together with Monarchy, Ercola, Johan Agebjรถrn and, yes get ready, none other than Stuart Price. The singer sure knows how to pick the right people to tune her fresh new pop sound to perfection.

In a recent interview, she explains why chose her artist name while providing a little more insight into her creative process. "Queen of Hearts symbolizes the strength and power, yet vunerability of a woman," she explains. "I don't write lyrics about 'DJs on the dance floor.' I write about love, loss, betrayal, and inner strength." "

The Queen represents the ultimate position of power for a woman, and I think there's nothing sexier than a strong, powerful woman." (Listen and download to Queen of Hearts "Spanish Sahara" after the break.)

[REMIX] Marina And The Diamonds "Radioactive" (DJ Chuckie Remix)

Marina-remix

The orginal version of Marina & The Diamond's "Radioactive" is hard to improve upon. It's a high-grade pop jam that perfectly combines Stargate's big soundboard sonics with Marina's arresting vocals and her distinct point of view. But the British singer trusted turntable meister DJ "Dirty Dutch" Chuckie with the song to give it a total make-over and make it his own. The result is an explosive and hard-edged dancefloor powerhouse that will kick your Wednesday morning right into gear. Listen to it after the break.
