After her stint with David Guetta on that incredible "Titanium," Sia once again adds some gravitas to a slick pop production. This time it's an uptempo duet with Flo Rida on his brand-new single "Wild Ones." Sia is a singers' singer who has the power to convey the purest of emotion by just singing one single note. And that honest sentiment is exactly what she brings to "Wild Ones." It's a very unexpected collaboration but judging from this small snippet it totally works. But that really should come as no surprise though. Everything Sia touches turns into amazing.
After a pretty smooth trip over to London today from Atlanta via Amsterdam, I've been trying to beat that nagging jetlag this afternoon by being out and about, roaming around W1 and spending a good amount of time at HMV on Oxford Street. That store is one of the few mega music retailers still around with a pretty decent collection of music across three floors packed with old and current releases.
So while being in London this week, fresh new British music is obviously on top of my mind and today is a perfect day to introduce you to new girl group Stooshe. They are the trio of Karis, Courtney and Alex who may seem like just another pop happy girl band, but Stooshe has a whole lot more swagger and spunk on their sleeves mixed in with a good amount of (strategically placed) swearing that gives their sound a solid punch that makes them stand out from the pack.
The three were assembled by a savvy management team after two of them were spotted at a London Topshop by a talent scout who saw immediately that the three ladies had some explosive energy together. Add to that their unique style and gift for writing catchy and cheeky tunes and what you have is a powerful new pop trio that is likely to go places. Stooshe has been working on their debut LP with beat maestro Futurecut who has turned the group's raw talent into a sleek pop offering primed for global pop domination.
Early fans here in the U.K. have gotten a taste of Stooshe with their in-your-face single "Betty Woz Gone" that combines a gritty hip hop attitude with soulful vocals and a big melodic pop hook. Now that "Betty Woz Gone" is slowly but surely settling in after a soft release, more Stooshe goodness is on the way soon.
Sample a bit of Kat Krazy remix of Stooshe's new single "Love Me" that will be positioned to break them in the U.K. Sure, it is a remix, but given Krazy's apprach to not stray too far from the originals he takes on, you can get a pretty good feel of what direction Stooshe is heading. And from what I'm hearing it's going to be fingerlickin' good. Watch that Stooshe -they will be big.
Steve Aoki's forthcoming artist album "Wonderland" is shaping up to be one of the hottest dance releases of 2012 that includes collaborations with people like Rivers Cuomo, and hot up and comers like Kay and Wynter Gordon. In anticipation of that album release, Aoki released a special club version of his new single "Ladi Dadi" today that features the glowing vocals of pop crooner Wynter Gorden. This cut of "Ladi Dadi" is a prequel to the album version.
Gorden adds a welcome soulful vibe to the blazing dancefloor stomper that includes a massive dubstep drop that sure will please Aoki's hard-core fans. Aoki writes, "I wrote a whole new dubstep drop that is dirty and simply nutty. Starts off with the four on the floor leading you into the heavy bass chorus then right into the vocal hook and does it all over again." He adds, "This track has been one of my secret weapons in the past months."
As great it is to experience more new work from Aoki, it is also pretty darn exciting to hear Wynter Gordon make an appearance again. Her "With The Music I Die" was one of the most striking new pop releases this year that put Gordon in pole position for success in 2012. Her full-length debut LP cannot come soon enough as I'm concerned, and I'm especially very curious to hear what's has been cooking up with pop man Starsmith and Aussie DJ duo Nervo on her album.
In preparation of a national tour early next year, Aoki has been using some of his free time to film a bunch of music videos for "Wonderland" in advance. Two weeks ago, I was on the set of his video shoot with rising Canadian pop sensation Kay in Los Angeles (directed by DJ Skeet Skeet) that is going to be a totally fun video. Look out for that and in the meantime, check out Aoki's collaboration with Wynter Gordon.
