Head over to GRAMMY.com to read my latest blog about the upcoming 54th GRAMMY Awards. In this new blog, I specifically discuss this year's nominations in the pop categories that is a celebration of chart-toppers and fan favorites mixed in with a few surprises. I point out in the blog that with so many pop recordings released every year and the evolving, genre-mashing nature of pop, selecting the year's top contenders is at best a daunting task for members of The Recording Academy. But despite all that, the Academy has done a fine job this year putting together an impressive line up of pop nominees who are all worthy of GRAMMY gold. Click here for the full article.
Ellie Goulding was part of a very small, select group of international artists who were invited by the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize organization to perform at the annual musical tribute to the year's Nobel Peace Prize Laureate this weekend.
Goulding performed alongside Janelle Monae, David Gray, Sugarland, Jill Scott, Bernhoft and the World Youth Choir at the Oslo Spektrum in front of 6000 invited guests including many European luminaries. Moments after her appearance, Goulding took to Twitter and called her performance at the Nobel Peace Prize concert one the "proudest moments" of her life.
The British songstress performed her cover of Elton John's "Your Song," which hit number one in the U.K. around this time last year, and her break out hit "Starry Eyed." Goulding's breath-taking rendition of "Your Song" was especially moving with its wonderful orchestral arrangement that fit the spirit of the night perfectly.
Far East Movement's new single "Jello" (that features their spunky Interscope label mate Rye Rye) is gaining momentum on dancefloors around the country and with a video for the song hitting the airwaves soon, the DTLA foursome is positioned for continued success. The group is also unleashing some brand-new remixes to add some punch to the single release.
One of the remixes Far East Movement released overnight is a hot little make-over by British soundboard prodigy Unicorn Kid. The 20 year-old Edinburgh producer, DJ and composer flips FM's dirty bass sound completely up its head and turns "Jello" into a mind-altering slice of epic club goodness.
The revamp starts out atmospheric and lush, but after blowing some horns, Unicorn Kid unveils an irresistible new groove that combines a sample of Rye Rye's vocal hook with a richly melodic, euphoric synth riff that shines a whole new light on the original production. Unicorn Kid even peppers in some vintage video game effects to give this "Jello" remix his trademark sound. Very nicely done and incredibly addictive.
In related Far East Movement news, after playing the first leg of the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour in Canada last month, the group has continued playing shows in the U.S. Japan, Hong Kong and China. This week, the group will join the second leg of the Cherrytree Records tour alongside LMFAO, Natalia Kills, Rye Rye, Kay, Frankmusik and Colette Carr. Look out for new Cherrytree Pop Chop Minute episodes that will premiere on Wednesday, which we filmed during the tour last month.
