With the success of "In The Dark" and the news that Dev gave birth to a very healthy baby girl this week, details about her new music could hardly be contained. So after a remix of her new single "Naked" hit Soundcloud early last week, the alleged radio edit of the song popped up on file sharing sites on Friday. Dev (along with her producers The Cataracs) confirmed the leak and posted the full song on their Facebook pages last night. Leaking songs prematurely is not the right thing to do. Artists are often horrified by the idea that unfinished songs are making their way out. In Dev's case though, there's is another side to the argument. Dev is very much a product of the social media generation and she has posted many demos and tracks on YouTube for fans to share. For Dev a good leak can be a strategically calculated move to create a perfect launching pad for her new music. What has also helped Dev to break out into the pop mainstream over the last 18 months is her appearance on other people's tracks. She has been a featured vocalist on songs by Far East Movement, David Guetta, Martin Solveig, Eric Saade and JLS. "Naked" is different though. It's formulated as a duet and both Dev and Enrique Iglesias are both equally credited. Muscially, the song continues where "In The Dark" left off. The Cataracs have totally found Dev's sonic sweet spot by turning down the BPMs and creating a sleek and hypnotic club groove that is mighty infectious. It's the perfect backdrop for Dev's oh-so sexy and sultry performance that dominates "Naked" along with Enrique Iglesias' yearning vocals that amplify the production's summery qualities. It's one of those tracks that the more you hear it, the more you love it. It gets under your skin. In a good way. ("Naked" will be available 12/20 on Indie Pop/Universal Republic) What I loved about Robyn's performance of "Call Your Girlfriend" and "Dancing On My Own" on NBC's Saturday Night Live last night was that it was as if she wrote the songs yesterday and performed them for the very first time. With millions of people across North America watching, the singer was fully aware that this was a big moment and she used every single second of it to make sure she delivered and more. Being a musical guest on the legendary show was not only a major achievement for the Swedish singer but also a bit of a victory for all of her fans who have been rooting for her for years. Yes, that's right. Our collective pop dreams can come true and it was nothing short of a celebration. Packed with intensity and passion, the performance of the GRAMMY nominated "Call Your Girlfriend" was particularly mind-blowing with Robyn bouncing from one side of the stage to the other, leaning her head to the wall for a second to take it all in, and dancing, grinding and rocking it out to create an unforgettable finale. Many in SNL's massive audience got to witness Robyn's pop magic for the very first time. While supporters of Robyn took to Twitter to rave about the singer, millions of new fans where immediately captured by the Swedish pop pixie as well and enthusiastically tweeted about the show. All of this Robyn chatter created a groundswell of conversation that resulted in a worldwide trending topic for "Dancing On My Own," a major accomplishment created by her fans. (Here's the proof.) Some of the best tweets I saw ranged from "I don't know this chick, but this song is dope" to "I've been hearing this song during spin class and now I know who she is. Amazing." For all of us Robyn fans out there who have been rooting for her and spreading the word about her music for years, the SNL performance was pure gratification. It was a moment of "I told you so" and a moment to be proud and happy that our beloved Robyn was finally getting the attention she deserves. It was proof that good pop can be heard and every single Robyn fan has a little part in the victory that occured last night. Hopefully, it will give the singer another push forward including taking home a couple of GRAMMY Awards on February 12. Prior to Robyn's fantastic performance on NBC's Saturday Night Live last night (more about that in a bit), superstar Katy Perry had some very kind things to say about the Swedish artist (and fellow GRAMMY nominee) in an interview with our friends at MTV News. The two pop pals have grown very close this after Katy Perry (a massive Robyn fan) invited the singer to be a special guest on her California Dreams arena tour. It was a perfect opportunity for Robyn to perform in front of large audiences and enchant them with her unique brand of pop. In a brief chat with MTV News, Perry summed it up very nicely. "[Robyn] is the epitome of effortless cool." She adds, "If you look at her wardrobe, you'd think 'I don't think I can wear that,' but she wears it and she looks great (. . . ) She's kind of like the tastemaker I think." Robyn chimes in as well for and makes a striking observation. "[SNL] is a legendary show (. . .) I'm the second Swede to appear after ABBA," she smiles, correcting herself saying "Oh and Eagle Eye Cherry, I googled that." More Recent Articles |
