Frank Ocean's beautifully composed "Pyrite" is exactly one of those tracks that convinced people like Jay-Z and Beyonce to work with the young singer/songwriter. Combining imaginative lyricism with timeless melodies, the acoustic ballad perfectly accentuates Ocean's knack for songwriting. "Pyrite" is an unreleased track that was never included on his "Nostalgia, Ultra" mixtape, but is one of his finest efforts to date.
New York bred, Los Angeles DJ/producer Pdex agrees and decided to take on Ocean's bare-bone original. He revamped it with a gentle dancefloor groove and subtle Balearic stylings to intensify the emotional qualities of the song. Pdex even includes a sample of Kraftwerk's classic "Trans Europe Express" in the chorus of the mix to give the track a solid electro touch.
Pdex writes me. "I'm a fan of Frank Ocean's. I think he's a real talent, especially when it comes to songwriting. I heard the original version of 'Pyrite,' which is just Frank singing over acoustic guitar and I threw some drums over the track to see how it would sound and it evolved from there.I've been listening to a lot of Kraftwerk records lately which explains the 'Trans Europe Express' sample."
After collaborating with Jay-Z and Kanye West, Ocean's momentum is stronger than ever. Rolling Stone just selected Frank Ocean to their coveted 2011 Hot List, which means that the mainstream is finally catching up to his talent. Island Def Jam will be re-releasing "Nostalgia, Ultra" as a full-length album (after initially rejecting it) in 2012. "Swim Good" is the new single taken from the album that was released last week. Listen to it on Rdio.
When I first heard the punchy Cali bohemi-pop of Los Angeles songstress Sirah, it reminded me somewhat of Katy Perry back in her "One Of The Boys" days. Sirah serves up big rock-edged pop hooks and a take-it or leave-it attitude that Perry has turned so successfully into a platinum-selling art. Check out Sirah's latest greatest "Double Yellow Lines" to get a taste of her pop-savvy sound.
Sirah may be new to most of you, but she has been stirring up a storm in and around Los Angeles for years now. Starting out as a rapper and MC, Sirah has performed alongside Lady Tigra and Kid Sister, and she's also close pals with people like DJ Skeet Skeet and fellow L.A. up and comers DWNTWN.
Now, still unsigned, Sirah is gearing up to bring her spunk and swagger to the rest of the world with her new EP. While still mostly a hip hop effort, this new EP is a promising introduction to Sirah's taste for pop. Watch the sunny video for "Double Yellow Lines" after the break. (Download MP3)
