Prior to their performance at the Air Canada Center in Toronto last Monday, the entire Cherrytree Records cast of talent headed to MuchMusic's TV studios for an entire hour of interviews and performances in front of a live studio audience at New Music Live.
Colette Carr, Frankmusik and Kay sat down with one of the show's hosts and chatted a little bit about the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour, the joy of touring, wardrobes and the three even showed off some of their beat-boxing skills. Fun little chat that was some much-deserved major coverage for the three newcomers. Watch the segment here.
Not discussed on the program are some of their current projects. Colette and Frank are focused on fan favorite "No I.D.", while Colette has more new music coming soon. Kay just released her new "Going Diamond" on the Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour compilation disc that features rap icon Kurtis Blow and was produced by Martin "Cherry Cherry Boom Boom" Kierszenbaum (note Kay's nod to him on her shirt).
I will be posting my report about my time on Cherrytree Pop Alternative Tour very soon. Also, we shot some fun backstage interviews in Montreal that will go up on CherrytreeRecords.com and this blog very soon.
ZZ Ward found just the right location to film the video for "Better Off Dead." The video was shot at an abandoned mental institution in downtown Los Angeles, which is the perfect backdrop for that eerie, yet very soulful "Better Off Dead." So brace yourself in a straight jacket and have a look.
Like I wrote before, "Better Off Dead" is an incredibly nifty remake of Tyler, The Creator's shock tune "Yonkers" that is dominated by that that spooky and slightly creepy sampled loop that sounds a bit like a torture wheel that spins on and on, and ultimately will drive you, quite literally, insane.
"Better Off Dead" is a perfect track for newcomer ZZ Ward to make a lasting impression. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Oregon, ZZ grew up listening to her Dad write and sing the blues. "I fell in love with the sincerity of Etta, the soul of Muddy and the power of Big Mama," she writes on Facebook. As a teenager she got infatuated with hip hop music and now she combines both blues and modern-day hip hop to create her own brew of music. Look out for the release of ZZ's mixtape "Eleven Roses" this week. (Download MP3)
