Emerging Canadian pop sensation Kay hits all the right notes on the fantastic new "Going Diamond" that features none other than hip hop and rap legend Kurtis Blow. Masterfully produced by Martin "Cherry Cherry Boom Boom" Kierszenbaum, "Going Diamond" is a mighty fresh, retro-styled and hella bouncy hip pop ditty that does a superb job further unveiling the colorful and richly imaginative world of Kay.
In a way, "Going Diamond" is a homage to the people that have inspired Kay, which makes the song the ideal artistic platform to further launch her career from. Working with Kurtis Blow was a dream come true for Kay who often cites Blow as one of her major inspirations alongside Outkast and other classic hip hop acts.
Kay creatively infuses all of those influences with contemporary, radio-savvy pop sensibilities courtesy of people like Ryan Tedder, Evan Bogart and Martin Kierszenbaum who know exactly how to package Kay's unique sound and prep it for the charts.
Kay embraces not only the classic sounds of hip hop, but she also takes visual cues from the hip hop movement in her fashion and styling. This fearless '90s fly girl is an emerging style icon who just opened her own merch store to share some of the things she loves with fans. Also tune in to her Tumblr for fun pics of her wildly unique sense of fashion.
Being sweet and spunky while serving up a whole lotta swagger, "Going Diamond" reminds me of the raw star power that Kay's fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado unleashed upon the masses early on in her career. With potent tunes like "Going Diamond," Kay is set to follow the same trajectory as Furtado - going straight from gold to platinum to diamond. If you're looking for the next superstar. Look no further. Kay's about to take over.
After stirring a groundswell of interest with tracks like "Climbing Walls" and "Eskimo Boy," Aussie indie pop outfit Strange Talk now returns with the brand-new "Sexual Lifestyle." You may remember that I first alerted you about the group over a year ago when I declared them one of the most promising new groups to look out for in 2011.
Since then, the group has released an EP, commissioned several remixes, and they have toured with bands like Marina & The Diamonds and The Rapture to further develop their live show. In more recent months, the foursome have been writing and recording music for their debut full-length album that will be released in 2012 and will be the kick off to a global Strange Talk invasion.
The Australian outfit uniquely pairs considerable musical talents from disparate backgrounds – with vocalist/producer Stephen Docker immersed in the classical world a former violinist for the Australian Youth Orchestra and bassist Gerard Sidhu as a regular fixture on the Melbourne DJ circuit crafting banging house beats.
In many ways, Strange Talk picks up where Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club left off. Their music is an instantly catchy brew of sweet and crunchy pop with a commercial lining that combines gentle guitar riffs, pulsating electro beats and nostalgic synth flourishes. "Sexual Lifestyle" is an excellent example of that and helps to further define what musical goodness Strange Talk is all about. In fact, it's the kind of mainstream-friendly hip and cool tunage that music supervisors salivate over.
"Sexual Lifestyle" was written and produced by the band in Melbourne, featuring some additional tweaks by Van She Tech and mixed in Los Angeles by John Fields who is known from his work for The Presets and Cut Copy. Strange Talk are set to play a string of headline dates this November. Joining the band in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney is New Zealand pop sensation Zowie. (Download MP3)
Janelle Monae has teamed with the guys of power pop trio Fun. for a special acoustic version of their duet "We Are Young." It's a beautifully performed slice of alt-pop balladry that is all about letting go and living in the moment. "We are young so let's set the world on fire. We can burn brighter than the sun," the group's Nate Ruess and the infinitely flawless Monea beautifully harmonize in the song's chorus.
The studio recording of "We Are Young" is taken from the group's new LP, titled "Some Night," that will be in stores on February 21. The record was produced by acclaimed producer Jeff Bhasker who most recently worked on "Watch The Throne" and other Kanye West tracks.
Fun. is not all new to the scene though. The group began in 2008 when Nate Ruess teamed up with Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff to meld an array of diverse inspirations into their own irresistible and freewheeling pop songcraft. The band drew instant attention for their contemporary rethinking of classic '70s pop, where ornate arrangements and inspired orchestrations meet present-day rock 'n' roll that is prominently featured on their new LP. "Some Night" will be released on Fueled By Ramen/Atlantic Records.
